Hi , October has a way of making Nova Scotia feel a little different. The roads get brighter. The air gets cooler. Farm stands fill up with apples and pumpkins. And suddenly, places we might drive past every other month feel worth stopping for. Last month, I mentioned that we’d be exploring Memory Keepers next. I haven’t forgotten. But October arrived with too many wonderfully seasonal Nova Scotia adventures to ignore, so I’m changing course for this month and leaning into Seasonal Adventures instead. We’ll come back to Memory Keepers soon. For now, let’s make the most of the things that only October can give us. This month: Seasonal Adventures 🍂Seasonal Adventures are really about letting the time of year give you a reason to do something a little differently. It doesn’t have to mean planning a big fall road trip or trying to squeeze every possible activity into October. It might be taking the long way home because the leaves are changing. Stopping at an orchard or farm stand. Walking a familiar trail and noticing how different it looks from a month ago. Or finally doing one of those things you always say you’ll do “sometime this fall.” That’s the idea behind Seasonal Adventures: noticing what is here right now before the season changes again. Need a little inspiration? If you’re someone who makes a giant seasonal bucket list and then wonders where the month went, I put together a simpler approach. How to Create a Seasonal Bucket List You’ll Actually Use It’s about choosing things you genuinely want to experience and leaving enough space to actually enjoy them.
A few Nova Scotia adventures for October🎃 Meet the Pumpkin People in Kentville The Pumpkin People pop up around Kentville during October and are one of those wonderfully quirky Nova Scotia traditions that make a fall drive a little more fun. Make a trip of it, wander around town and see which display becomes your favourite. 👻 Catch the Mahone Bay Scarecrows while you can The Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival doesn’t run all month, so this is one for early October. Hundreds of handmade scarecrows take over the town, giving you a pretty great excuse for an autumn wander around Mahone Bay. 🍎 Go somewhere autumn has arrived Visit an orchard, stop at a farm stand, explore a colourful back road or walk a trail you haven’t visited in a while. It doesn’t have to be a big outing. A thermos, a scenic stop and a road you’ve never taken can count as an adventure too. Market season is here!October also marks the beginning of a busy stretch of markets for Rediscover Nova Scotia: Playful Adventures. I’ll be at three this month, so if you’re nearby, come say hello! Saturday, October 10 · 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m. It’s their final market of the season and falls on Thanksgiving weekend. Saturday, October 17 · 10 a.m.–2 p.m. This market is in support of the Upper Room Food Bank. Sunday, October 25 · 12–4 p.m. This one is outdoors, so bundle up and make an October afternoon of it! I’ll have my playful adventure products with me, and I’d genuinely love to meet some of you in person. Next month, as promised, we’ll finally turn our attention to Memory Keepers and some simple ways to hold onto the adventures and everyday moments we don’t want to forget. Until then, enjoy October while it’s here. Happy adventuring, Nancy |
